The Platform Project

2014-2016

Partners: JP Morgan Chase Foundation, Network Rail, Lambeth Council

Launched in 2014, The Platform offered local entrepreneurs free, low-risk space in a repurposed WC block to pilot their business ideas on a rotating short-term basis. Successful participants were offered follow on space in renovated railway arches, with four businesses successfully moving to commercial leases. The evolution of this neighbourhood-led approach in partnership with local community organisations has led to the transformation of a triangle of wasteland between a railway viaduct and the Loughborough Estate. Purpose-built work, events and growing space, LJ Works, was launched there in 2023.

Young Persons Enterprise Hub Concept Development
Young Persons Enterprise Hub Concept Development

Partners: Lambeth Council, Spiral

Meanwhile Space partnered with Spiral Skills (a Lambeth-based social enterprise supporting young people with careers education) to explore the viability of a dedicated enterprise and support space for Lambeth’s young people. The brief was to work in partnership with local young people to develop a vision for a dedicated professional environment supporting career paths, skills growth and the provision of business opportunity to an under-represented audience.

Project research was carried out in partnership with Spiral Skills Young Leaders, many of whom have first-hand experience of the barriers faced by young people in the community. Feasibility work included exploration into potential buildings and sites, best practice design, business and operational review, and social value potential. Collaborative knowledge-building was at the heart of this project, with a series of workshops and one-to-one conversations held with both Lambeth’s young people and youth sector organisations. Funded by the Future Workspace Fund (FWF) concept development grant, the project ultimately produced an ambitious yet achievable vision for the proposed enterprise hub.

Greenhill Way Feasibility Study
Greenhill Way Feasibility Study

Partners: Harrow Council

Meanwhile Space are working with Jan Kattein Architects and the London Borough of Harrow to transform a prominent town centre car park into a creative destination for a five-year meanwhile use period. Funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) under the Future High Streets Fund (FHSF), this project runs in parallel with wider town centre improvement works.

Meanwhile Space was first appointed to conduct a viability analysis for the site and were then appointed to deliver the project through RIBA design stages 0 to 6.

The project addresses community needs for creative workspaces, gathering, and leisure space, aiming to form new, and strengthen existing, relationships within the town centre, diversify the local offer and create opportunity for small businesses. Designed to be demountable, the project is to be relocated after five years. Meanwhile will operate the site upon build completion in February 2024.

Demountables Concept Development
Demountables Concept Development

2023

Partners: Lambeth Council, IF_DO

Lambeth Demountables is a collaboration between Meanwhile Space CIC and architects IF_DO. The project consits of a series of feasibility studies around Lambeth to determine which vacant sites (both council and privately owned) would be most suitable for new demountable buildings, and which would deliver the most social and economic benefit. Market demand analysis ensured that selected sites were in locations with a clear need, and are therefore viable and capable of delivering social value.

The outcome of this project enables applications for funding to realise new workspace on a number of the sites identified. Buildings should be demountable and subsequently relocated to other sites within Lambeth, dependent on the redevelopment plans and timelines for the selected sites.

A study commissioned by the Station to Station Business Improvement District (BID) to support businesses and property owners in Lambeth to activate their surplus or underused building space as workspace.

We took a hyperlocal approach to the analysis tool and report framework, partnering with Lambeth Council to develop them in tandem with key stakeholder ambitions, business demands and in response to available funding.

Arch Competition
Arch Competition

2017

Partners: Lambeth Council, GLA, Buono Prismontas

Since 2017, Meanwhile Space and Boano Prismontas (BP) architects have worked in partnership with the GLA, LB Lambeth and Network Rail (now The Arch Company) to deliver a design-led strategy that continues the work to unlock underused spaces and provide business incubation opportunities. Meanwhile Space wanted to find a “kit of parts” solution which will cost less, or on par with, £10,000 which is the standard Network Rail cost to do the basic lining of the arch and make it water tight and safe. Network Rail does not include any thermal qualities and capital cannot be reinvested into another arch. This kit of parts allows the capital investment required for a meanwhile use to be reused in many subsequent arches once the initial meanwhile use term had expired or when an earlier break is required.

In Summer 2017, The Arches Design Challenge competition was launched. Following design development with Atkins, the project was awarded to Boano Prismontas.

Their design was chosen as it is freestanding, provides a secure space internally, creates a warm and dry space, it is demountable and repeatable. The design is flexible enough to change to suit different arch shapes (tall, narrow, double length etc), making it an attractive choice to deal with an array of difficult arches and undercrofts nationwide. The design is also fully demountable, can be compactly stored (20 kit of parts could be stored in a single arch) and be moved to another location should the landlord require the arch back for further redevelopment.

The Willesden Green Town Team was formed as a result of the Mayor’s Outer London Fund Round 1, a collaborative initiative delivered for Brent Council, Design for London, The Architecture Foundation, Meanwhile Space, and Blue Consulting. The project focused on bringing positive change to Willesden High Road, but its lasting legacy is the strong and active partnership it fostered among local residents and businesses. This partnership is now empowered to continue building on the momentum generated, creating a vibrant and thriving town centre in Willesden.

This group is now focused on developing ideas and actions that will make Willesden a better place to live and work for everyone.
